This trek gives you the opportunity to observe and experience multiple types of landscapes, wildlife, and archaeological sites that are off the beaten path and unique to the region. If you want to go on a hiking trip in northern Peru that takes you away from crowds of tourists, allows you to interact with authentic Andean communities, and appreciate the gorgeous and diverse nature of northern Peru, look no further than the Laguna de Los Cóndores trek!
Day 1: Chachapoyas – Leymebamba – Laguna de los Cóndores
We start the day early at 5:00 AM. We will drive for two hours to the town of Leymebamba. At this time, you will be able to catch a few extra hours of sleep or watch the sunrise through the windows of the car as we drive through the scenic countryside of northern Peru. When we arrive in Leymebamba, we will eat breakfast at a local restaurant and enjoy our first meal from the Andean culture. After we have finished enjoying our meals, we will begin our trek for the day which will take approximately 10 hours. We typically cover this distance entirely on foot, but it is also possible to rent horses and cover part of the distance on horseback if you prefer. We will make periodic stops to rest and enjoy beautiful views as well as take a mid-day break for lunch. Following lunch, we will continue on our journey and eventually arrive at a small cabin near the Laguna de los Cóndores where we will eat dinner and spend the night.
Day 2: Visit to The Mausoleos and Sports Fishing
We will wake up early and eat breakfast before hiking about one hour to get to the Laguna de los Cóndores. When we arrive to the lagoon, we will have time to take pictures and relax in the beauty of mother nature before getting in a small boat and crossing the lagoon. After we have crossed the Laguna de los Cóndores, we will begin a one hour hike up to the lost mausoleums of the Chachapoya people. When we arrive at the mausoleums, our guide will show us around the site and teach us the most unique and interesting aspects about the Chachapoya mausoleums. When our tour of the area is complete, we will hike downhill to return to our boat and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and fishing. Just before the sun begins to go down, we will head back to our cabin, eat a delicious dinner, and sleep under the beautiful Andean sky.
Day 3: Laguna de los Cóndores – Leymebamba – Chachapoyas
We will wake up early and enjoy our final breakfast of the trek. After we have finished eating breakfast and have packed up our things, we will begin a 10 hour hike to the town of Leymebamba. When we arrive in Leymebamba, we will visit the unique Leymebamba Museum. This museum was constructed to serve as a way to preserve the mummies and artifacts recovered from the Laguna de los Cóndores in 1997. In the museum, you will have the opportunity to see over 2000 artifacts including 219 mummies from the Chachapoya mausoleums and 32 quipus from the Incas. Due to the items in the collection of this museum, it is easily one of the most unique in all of South America! After you have finished exploring the museum, we will return to Chachapoyas and conclude the trek.
